Elevador de Santa Justa/ Bairro Alto

Located close to Praca dos Restauradores is the famous 20th century elevator called Elevador de Santa Justa. It was designed by a French architect name Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, who was an apprentice of the architect who designed the Eiffel tower (I think it is clear to see the resemblance).  The elevator was slow moving to the top, but once on top the views were magnificent. I was able to see much of Lisbon, and was also able to see across the way to the Saint George Castle. You can also see the Igreja do Carma at the top, which is ruins of a church from many years ago, with mostly just it's beautiful arches remaining from after the 1755 earthquake. At the top we got out and walked around what is referred to as Bairro Alto (High Neighborhood). Up there we saw an old Italian Catholic church with some amazing paintings and architecture, as well as a square dedicated to the Portuguese poet Luiz Vas de Camoes, with a statue remembering him. I also went up the elevator with Camilia when she came to visit.
