The city of Lisbon has reminded me a lot of the city of San Francisco. It is very hilly and up and down, has cable cars, has a similar architecture and style, and it even has a Golden Gate Bridge! Okay, so it isn't the Golden Gate Bridge, but it actually was inspired by San Francisco's Golden Gate. It is about a half mile long, and was built in 1966. It was originally named Ponte Salazar after the dictator who had it built, but was renamed 25 de abril to commemorate Portugal's restoration of democracy and abolition of dictatorship on April 25th, 1974 (many other monuments throughout the city are similarly named, but this bridge is the most prominent and most famous). I think it is absolutely beautiful and gives a great feel to the city, especially with the Cristo Rei (Christ the King) statue (which was modeled after the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro) right next to the end of the bridge. As you can see in the difference of pictures between when I went the first time in September and the second time in November with Cam, the whether has changed quite a bit in that time.
